Time = Brain

That is the critical equation to remember if you feel you or someone you know may be suffering a stroke. And that's why you want to get your stroke care at the hospitals of HCA Virginia.

All six of our Richmond hospitals are Certified Primary Stroke Centers, as designated by The Joint Commission. We were the first to achieve that recognition in Central Virginia and the third in the state.

Your First Choice for Stroke Care

Certification from The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center requires CJW to meet predetermined measures which ensure evidenced based care is delivered to each and every patient. Certification also is indicative of the response processes and level of expertise needed to provide drugs within the recommended timelines. Door-to-needle (DTN) time of 60 minutes is a goal and NOT a requirement. We have 3 to 4.5 hours in certain circumstances to provide a clot dissolving drug.

We deliver care in a prompt, systematic and compassionate manner.

  • When we're notified of a potential stroke patient, our HCA Virginia stroke care team calls a Code Neuro. That's our well-established and highly integrated process for response, diagnosis and treatment of stroke, linking area first responders, outlying community hospitals and all HCA Virginia hospitals in Richmond.
  • Our continuous treatment for you begins before you even get to the hospital as soon as you're identified as a stroke patient which improves the care you receive across our continuum of services.
  • Then, we follow you all the way through our ER, into intensive care, rehabilitation and beyond.

We've been caring for stroke patients longer than anyone in Richmond, so you can rely on us for the fast response and effective treatment you need to save your brain and to safeguard your quality of life. Our comprehensive stroke care program offers a complete range of medical and surgical interventions, as well as stroke rehabilitation services for inpatients and outpatients to treat:

  • Ischemic stroke _ Loss of blood flow to the brain, resulting from a clot-blocked artery
  • Hemorrhagic stroke _ Bleeding into the brain, resulting from a ruptured artery in the brain
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA) _ An episode that starts like a stroke but resolves itself without noticeable symptoms

Neuroscience Intensive Care

Designed with your treatment and well-being in mind, our specialized HCA Virginia neuroscience intensive care units (NSICUs) with transitional step-down facilities set the standard in the region for quality stroke care.

Our NSICUs offer large and comfortable rooms equipped with Stratus_ Critical Care Booms (ceiling-mounted, moveable, mechanical arms) that provide staff and physicians with adequate access to the patient from every angle- especially the head, along with the ability to monitoring important patient information. Booms also allow more space for patients and family members to remain together.

In our neuroscience step-down transition facilities, you benefit from the quick response afforded by the latest in patient monitoring and nurse call (patient assistance alerting) technology. You'll also enjoy the quieter environment for recovery as you shift from inpatient care to your life, work and family.

Our Rehabilitation Services Benefit Stroke Survivors

After your stroke, we partner with you on the road to recovery. Our HCA Virginia Rehabilitation Services include physical, occupational and speech therapy, all enhanced by the latest technology to help you regain skills and independence.

You'll also benefit from our Stroke Peer Visitor Program, where you can share experiences with local stroke survivors who know what you're going through, and from our Stroke Support Groups, which gather at convenient times and locations.
